Dog training is a process. The basics (recall, stay, down, sit, heel, place, quiet, drop it) can and should be accomplished relatively quickly. Generally, every dog should go through three steps of learning.
Teaching: learned behaviors, natural behaviors, lured behaviors
Commands: Associating commands with these behaviors, at the correct time and "locking in" those behaviors with both positive and negative reinforcement
Proofing: Testing and confirming commands anywhere, any time, for any reason, without fail or hesitation
Every dog is different, every person is different, so should their training plan.

I highly recommend an initial consultation at your home, in the dog's regular environment or when possible, before acquiring the dog; with the whole family whenever possible. We discuss your particular goals, I get a chance to see how the family interacts with the dog.

It's about engagement and mental stimulation. They get out of the house, we are working on leash manners, behaving in the car, going on a hike , walking through Home Depot or hanging out at a coffee shop. This requires your dog to think, to engage with you or me, to learn how to act in the world and how to be a great companion. It also make for a well-rounded, social dog. It hears the real world; horns honking, people walking near it and everything else that's out there. Just like a child that has been sheltered and home schooled, there is a whole world out there that they need to be able to engage with and starting sooner and regularly is the way to get them comfortable.
This can be done together with you and your dog (preferred) or for well-trained dogs that I am comfortable with.
